As a pianist, Simon GOUBERT knows melody. As a drummer, he knows what he has to do. On Paul DESMONDs TAKE FIVE, which opens the album, Simon GOUBERT lets the musicians introduce the theme gently before giving them a breadth and range of expression rarely heard on this classic of classics. Following that RIVERBOP, composed by Steve GROSSMAN, wicked and dramatic, leads to the beautiful sigh of NAIMA, reminiscent of the work of John COLTRANE, the inspiration for part of Simon GOUBERTs music. The playing evidences a natural and easy interplay between the musicians. Finally, the long composition HAITI, resembling as much as anything a spiritual quest, reveals its secrets. Simon GOUBERTs music breathes, and unfolds itself with remarkable passion, replete with emotion and poetry. |
